Ms. ByersSmall's Reference for International Society of Technology (ISTE)
Standards as She Continues Learning Experiences

This chart contains the ISTE standards for teachers and an artifact created by Ms. ByersSmall that demonstrates her understanding and use of that standard. Each artifact also includes a reflection of how the artifact meets the standard, why this learning was important, and how she will continue learning beyond this activity.

Concept Map
After reading Concept Mapping as a Mindtool for Critical Thinking by Nada Dabbagh, I used Inspiration software to create a concept map.  My concept map illustrates the connections I made between Dabbagh's main ideas and my personal teaching experiences.

Interative Presenation
I used Microsoft's PowerPoint software to create an interactive presenation for my middle level computer students. This presenation will be used by students to review material learned in class about using a digital camera.

Multi-media Video
Two of my classmates and I used iMove to create a spoof on Christmas being a "Wonderful Time of the Year". We used digital video, still photographs some that that had been edited with Photoshop Elements 4.0, recorded voices, and music in making the movie.
Concept Map
This experience reinforced the power of making connections between ideas and showing them graphically in the diagram view of Inspiration. Recognizing the connections and then taking steps to create and/or make them with purpose demonstrates that knowledge and skills have been "learned."

My next steps will include using this software to create a diagram of how computer skills I teach my students relate and connect to the other content areas the students study.

Interative Presentation
This experience provided me with another application for software that I was familar with.

I will show my computer students how to create interactive presenations and have them create one with information they are comfortable with. The student created presenations could be used as study guides or review opportunities for other students.

Multi-media Video
This team activity provided an opportunity to work with two other classmates and practice teamwork. I was required to provide both on-camera and off-camera help to my team. This project requires planning, camera experience, photography editing and video editing.

During my filming experience I was pressed for time with my subjects and I learned how important it is to have a storyboard and to follow it. I know that middle level students find a storyboard a useless step in filming. I will create an activity for my students that includes an expectation of filming and a short time limit for filming.

B.demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

2. Planning and Designing Learning Environments
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:

A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.

I used NoteShare to create a notebook that contains the information I share with students to improve their Internet Research skills. The notebook includes information for students to read or listen to, activities for the student to complete, and questions for students answer. This project allows each student to work at his/her own pace. It allows students to select whether they read the information or have the information read to them.

It is important to remember that each student is an individual with different learning styles, patterns, and needs. Using NoteShare to create differientiated lessons for students can make all students' activities look similar from the outside but have different looking results for the same outcomes.

I will further differientiate instruction by creating a pre-activity assessment to determine what each student knows and then include different activities within the notebook so each student can continue or broaden his/her learning based on his/her prior knowledge.

I will also add a "sharing" component to the notebook, so we expand the use of the software.

B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.

C. identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.

D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

3. Teaching, Learning, & Curriculum:
Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. teachers:

A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.

B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.

C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.

D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

4. Assessment & Evaluation:
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:

A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.

B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

C. apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

5. Productivity and Professional Practice:
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivitiy and professional practice. Teachers:

A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.

C. apply technology to increase productivity.

D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

Podcast
I used Garage Band to create a podcast of "The Pod Show" with another student. "The Pod Show" is a short news podcast of the happenings at a middle level school. The audience for the podcast is students and parents, via the web.

Web Pages
I used SeaMonkey to create a web page that will communicate with parents, students, and colleagues my philosophy of education, classroom expectations, grade level technology expectations, sample technology projects, and other information.
Podcast
This activity used technology to create a product that communicates with others the happenings of a school. Using software, such as Garage Band, students can publish their products for a wide audience. When students know their work will be publish for others they are more concerned about being clearn and effective communicators.

This activity created a model that I will use to show students how a podcast can share snipets of information about our school. I will have pairs of students creating a similar  school-news podcasts for specific dates.

Student podcasts will be posted on a school Intranet site.

Web Pages
I can be a more effective teacher if I have open lines of communication with students and families. This site will provide the opportunity for a student's family and/or support system to get to know me, what I expect in the classroom, and to see samples of the technology MJHS students are using to further their education.

I do not feel well versed in posting the different formats for a file. In other words, when should a podcast or movie be streaming vs a Quick Time movie. I know some of this information was shared in class, but I was able to follow the reasoning behind using one format vs the other. I will do some follow up on this and add the necessary file formats to these web pages.

I also need to contact my district IT department about posting my web page on the MJHS school website. I will also continue to update and improve this site. It is my goal to have at least one sample of student created work for each project created in my classroom.

I hope that my site will be an example for teachers in my building and encourage them to use this line of communication with students and their families/support systems. I will gladly help other teachers get started with Sea Monkey Composer and creating their own web pages.

6. Social, Ethical, Legal & Human Issues:
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply that understanding in practice. Teachers:

A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.

B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.

D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.

E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
